Stocking Up On Postage Stamps

Editorial update: September 6, 2026. This article has been revised to remove obsolete postage figures and investment language.

Keeping some postage on hand can make routine mailing easier. Plan that supply around the letters and cards you actually send, rather than buying a large quantity simply because postal rates might change.

What value does a Forever stamp retain?

A standard domestic Forever stamp has the value of the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce stamped-letter price, regardless of when it was purchased. USPS lists that price as $0.82 under the rates effective July 12, 2026. Check the current USPS price list before mailing.

This continuing postage value is a mailing feature. It is not a promise of investment returns or resale value. Larger, heavier, nonmachinable, or international mail can require additional postage or another category.

Plan for the mail you expect to send

Look at your recent use, the kinds of envelopes you send, and any occasions already on your calendar. Keep domestic, Global Forever, and additional-postage categories separate so that you can choose the right combination.

When this guide is updated again, the price above should be checked against USPS. The calculation for a particular envelope still depends on its finished weight, dimensions, shape, and destination.
