Wedding Invitation Postage: How to Choose Stamps and Avoid Mailing Delays

Wedding invitation postage depends on the envelope you actually mail: its weight, dimensions, shape, and contents. The stamp design is the finishing touch. A simple invitation may need different postage from a suite with an RSVP envelope, details card, and decorative wrap. Before buying wedding stamps for the entire guest list, prepare one complete sample and check it against USPS requirements.

Start with one finished invitation suite

Assemble your sample exactly as guests will receive it. Include the invitation, inserts, reply card, reply envelope, envelope liner, and any band or embellishment. Seal the outer envelope before weighing it. Checking only the invitation card can leave you with an incomplete estimate.

Keep that sample beside your assembly materials. If you later add a map, change the paper, or use a different envelope, repeat the check. For a guest list with several versions of the suite, prepare a sample of each version. This gives you a practical way to organize postage without assuming every envelope is identical.

Check the envelope size and shape

USPS letter dimensions run from 5 to 11½ inches long and 3½ to 6 1/8 inches high, with a maximum thickness of ¼ inch. Thickness minimums also apply. Meeting those outer measurements does not automatically make an envelope machinable.

Under the USPS physical standards for retail letters, characteristics such as excessive rigidity, uneven thickness, certain closures, or an unsuitable length-to-height ratio can make a letter nonmachinable. A square envelope can therefore require additional postage even when it weighs less than one ounce. An invitation that exceeds letter limits needs a separate classification check; adding another stamp does not resolve every size or packaging issue.

Calculate postage for the actual mailing

Use the USPS Retail Postage Price Calculator with your planned mailing date and destination, then follow the prompts for the finished piece. Separate domestic invitations from international ones when planning your budget. Do not apply a domestic estimate to an overseas guest.

For a thick, square, or decorated suite, take the sample to a Post Office counter before stamping the full batch. Ask staff to assess the weight, shape, and mail category together. Write down the required postage and keep it with that version of your invitation. Check prices for your planned mailing date instead of relying on an old screenshot or a previous event's estimate.

Understand what wedding Forever stamps cover

A standard domestic Forever stamp has the postage value of the current First-Class Mail single-piece, one-ounce letter price. A floral or romantic design does not give it extra postage value. Heavier invitations, nonmachinable pieces, and optional services may require additional payment.

Read the stamp's stated category as well as its artwork. USPS distinguishes standard Forever, Additional Ounce, Two Ounce, and other categories in its postage payment standards. Choose the combination that meets your confirmed total. If you enclose a stamped RSVP envelope, assess that return envelope separately; it is another piece of mail when your guest sends it back.

Protect decorative details and leave room for addresses

Wax seals and ribbons can look beautiful on stationery, but their placement matters. The USPS guide to sending letters recommends placing externally embellished invitations inside another envelope. USPS also describes taking embellished mail to the counter and asking about hand-canceling. Confirm the final packaging and required postage with staff; a request for hand-canceling is not a delivery-date guarantee.

Plan the envelope face before attaching stamps. Give the recipient's address enough clear space, include the apartment or unit when needed, and add a return address. Choose a design after the postage check

Once you know what each suite requires, compare wedding postage stamp designs with your invitation colors. Botanical stationery may pair well with the flower postage stamp collection. Check each product's description, quantity, and postage category before ordering; a collection name does not determine a stamp's postal use.

Before mailing the batch, confirm these four details:

• Your sample includes every insert and the final outer envelope.
• Each invitation version has been weighed and assessed.
• Domestic, international, and RSVP postage have been considered separately.
• Your address list and planned mailing date have been reviewed.
